Early Life and Influences
Henri Cartier-Bresson was born in Chanteloup-en-Brie, France, on August 22, 1908. His father was a wealthy textile manufacturer, and his mother was a talented pianist. Cartier-Bresson grew up in a privileged environment, and he was exposed to art and culture from an early age. He began taking photographs as a teenager, and he was soon recognized for his talent. In 1927, he met André Kertész, who became his mentor and helped him develop his style.
